Jan Peto: About avalanches from A to Z
As many other people who devoted their lives to mountain activities, accordingly Ján Peťo has been devoting his time to them since his childhood. Jan was born in Ružomberok, Slovakia; as he had mountains near at hand he had already fallen into the friendship with climbing rope as a child. Since that time he has hiked and climbed a lot of peaks in Slovakia or in foreign countries. His climbing account contains several hard ascents in our Tatras as well as in the Alps, Caucasus, and Tian Shan.
Ing. Ján Peťo graduated as a forest ranger and he managed to amazingly harmonize his hobbies with his profession. For long years, Jan has also been working as a mountain climbing instructor, a mountain guide with the international license UIAGM, and a professional member of the Mountain Rescue Service in Slovakia.
As a mountain guide he helps to fulfill people’s dreams by guiding them while ascending up to the tops of Slovak as well as foreign summits! As an avalanche expert and rescuer he helps to protect and rescue people!
Infamous famous avalanches are known by everyone of us either from media or from our friends’ chatting; however, practically many of us know just a little about it. At the same time, everyone who goes to the winter mountain areas, not just mountain climber, alpine skier but hiker on the marked out trail or at the mountain chalet can encounter an avalanche.
There is no need to underestimate avalanche danger; therefore, we decided to include just this issue into our festival’s schedule. We think that everyone, who loves to visits mountain areas and does not want to give it up in winter times, is interested when, and where there is an avalanche danger, when the avalanche situation is critical, and how to behave to be safe.
From the workshop given by the expert with rich professional and practical experience (and with good reputation at home as well as abroad) we can learn about strategies for planning winter hikes and climbs, principles of safe movement in winter mountain environment, snow stability tests, operation of avalanche beacons and procedures when avalanche accident occurs…
We hope that workshop, presented by pleasant man Ján Peťo, makes our festival Horyzonty contribute to the fact that snow will bring you only joy and avalanche of laughter when having fun on snowy blanket!!!
